Rockabilly Baby!

This weekend the annual VLV Convention is taking place in where else...Las Vegas!  It's the largest Rockabilly convention in the world and it takes place every Easter weekend.  So in honor of said awesomeness, I thought I'd post a few pics of a few gorgeous chicas and some hip cats...Bettie included of course!
My polar is more often than not drawn to people who dwell in the underbellies of society when it comes to fashion, art, and music; and the bad girls (and guys) of the 1950s are no exception.  I'm a Libra, I have that duality thing going on...so I'm sure in a couple of days, I'll be thinking of '70s high glam and all it's glorious excess!  But today I'm thinking of daddy o's, greasers and kittens...Rockabilly baby!

Happy Easter! ;-)

Baby It's Cold Outside!

I'm all geared up and ready for Spring just as much as the next lady; But just a little reminder...it's still quite cold outside somewhere in the world, and very much so here in New York! So why not throw on a fun vintage cape to keep warm until the flowers bloom. :)

Youth Movement

I stumbled upon some old photographs via the NYPL Digital Archives.  If you have little to no knowledge of the Harlem Renaissance other than the fact that it was an historical period of time in which Harlem was in vogue...then these photos will prove that it was more than just a period of time in which a section of New York City was in vogue.

Known as "The New Negro Movement", the Harlem Renaissance was an artistic and cultural movement spanning the 1920s and 1930s.  Many famous and influential African-Americans came out of said movement; African-Americans such as Langston Hughes, Alain Locke, Zora Neale Hurston, Paul Robeson and many more.  I'd like to revisited the most notable players of "The New Negro Movement" in a separate post and focus on the influence they had on the youth of Harlem in this post.  The below photos were taken in 1939 at the Harlem Community Arts Center.  I love a young artistic mind!  I wonder if any of the children in the pictures ever went on to become players in the art world.  It's amazing how a photograph can tell a story but remain anonymous enough to let your imagination create wonder and fantasy.

The children are impeccably dressed for art class, wouldn't you say? And because this is a vintage fashion blog, it wouldn't be right if I didn't address the wardrobe...in fact I wouldn't be me if I didn't address the wardrobe! I love the kid in the last photo who is wearing short pants, amazing diamond print socks, and "spit shine" shoes!  He's a dapper little fella!

The Fashion Era

In honor of New York's upcoming fashion week, I am posting these amazing fashion illustration cards that I found over at Dear Golden....they're like flashcards for adults!  Adults who eat, sleep and breathe fashion that is.  The illustrations are broken down by decade; oddly enough the 1940s/50s is combined.  At first view I rescanned the post at least twice asking myself where is the 1950s? Only to finally realize the artist combined the two.  In any event my favorite is of course the 1970s...it's MY decade! But coming in a close second is the 1980s...how could I not love it?!?  It's "Madonna" wearing Versace's iconic Andy Warhol dress! Love!
